About the project
New Music for Kids and Teens targets at giving children and teenagers from all around Slovakia a chance to actively get to know contemporary music.
We would like to:
- introduce the language of contemporary music also on the lowest level of specialized musical education in Slovakia, i.e. at elementary music schools (EMS)
- actively involve children and teenagers in performance of new scores
- gain new audience and performers of contemporary music
- provide for a means of familiarizing with European and non-European contemporary music
We strive to accomplish these goals by creating a database of children's compositions by contemporary music composers. The idea comes primarily from the fact that, despite their interest, music school teachers frequently struggle with a lack and unavailability of contemporary music literature for children.
Our goal is to lessen this problem. Works published in the database are easily accessible even for junior performers and their teachers. They will be able to find here compositions on various technical difficulty levels and of varied content, as well as a broad variety of styles of contemporary classical music.
Important part of our project is the new concert cycle Portraits), at which children and teenagers will play works of contemporary authors. The concerts will take place at EMSs throughout Slovakia. The range of compositions performed at the concerts is based on works published in our database. First Portraits were held in Slovakia on November 3th, 2011.
These events will be crowned by 60 concerts - Portraits across whole Slovakia in 2013. There will also be a special children's concert at the international festival ISCM World New Music Days 2013 in Košice, organized for the first time in Slovakia together with the International Society for Contemporary Music – Slovak Section (ISCM).
We would like to enhance creativity of instructors, teaching on elementary and secondary schools of art, by seminars and commented concertspresenting fascinating milestones of the 20th century music, providing a general overview of contemporary musical creation and dealing profoundly with specific features of the composition and performance of contemporary children's music.
